Matt's Guide to Thursday TV: Pick Parks Over Gentleman

Amy Poehler and Adam Scott It will be a sad day in TV land if (as Nielsen history suggests) the powerhouse of CBS' The Big Bang Theory helps deliver the abysmal new How to Be a Gentleman a ratings win over NBC's little-show-that-could-do-better Parks and Recreation. Here's my Fall Preview take on How to Be a Gentleman (CBS, 8:31/7:31c), a misfire that almost makes me miss last year's Bleep My Dad Says, which wasted the same time period: "Felix and Oscar should sue. The overused Odd Couple premise gets one of its more cringeworthy sitcom workouts in the latest assault on the male mystique - caricatured as a squeaky-voiced priss and a bellowing gym-bunny boor. Actually, mankind should sue." To elaborate: David Hornsby plays a metrosexual metropolitan fusspot whose world is rocked when the magazine he writes for changes focus from urbane to youth-pandering drivel. To "man up" (one of the season's dreariest trends, and the title of an equally awful upcoming sitcom on ABC), he turns to a gym trainer who turns out to be a former high-school bully, broadly played by Kevin Dillon in a role the Entourage crew would have mocked. It couldn't be more forgettable, but what's really irksome is the waste of a strong supporting cast, including 24's Mary Lynn Rajskub as Hornsby's sardonic sister and Flight of the Conchords' Rhys Darby as her mewling husband.Want more Matt Roush? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!Meanwhile, an outstanding episode of Parks and Recreation (8:30/7:30cs) taps the Tammy vein of comic gold, with the arrival of Ron Swanson's justifiably feared ex-wife "Tammy One," variously described as a "psychological mastermind" and "hellacious nightmare." Understatements. Patricia Clarkson is a severe scream as this icy menace, wielding an IRS audit as a weapon. (My admiration for this actress grows each time I see her. Having just watched her Emmy-worthy performance in the upcoming Lifetime movie anthology Five, as a woman facing breast cancer with savage wit and a love for life, her range never fails to astound.)The impact Tammy One has on Ron's personality and trademark look are so alarming, Leslie literally is forced to try to slap some sense into him. Hearing Nick Offerman say, "Leslie, you're a panic" is itself a panic. Can Tammy Two (Megan Mullally) be the "Mothra" to Tammy One's "Godzilla"? Will the original Tammy - a mountain mama seemingly modeled after Margo Martindale's Justified character - be able to rescue Ron in a climactic battle royale? I wish I were as entertained by the ongoing subplot involving Tom's ridiculous new entertainment venture, but for those back in the office trying to bring Ron back into the light, this is about as funny as it gets.So what else is on? ... Sounds like a formula for disaster on CBS' The Big Bang Theory (8/7c), as Leonard agrees to be Amy's date at a wedding. ... It's flashback time on the CW's The Vampire Diaries (8/7c), as Klaus and Stefan's road trip to Chicago triggers memories of the Roaring (and Biting) '20s, when Stefan was still a Wild Young Vamp. ... Another flashback alert, as the second episode of CBS' intriguing Person of Interest (9/8c) finds Finch (Michael Emerson) reflecting on The Machine's origins. ... In the revolving door of Oceanside Wellness Center, Benjamin Bratt joins ABC's Private Practice (10:02/9:02c) in its fifth season, while Audra McDonald moves on to better things, like a Broadway revival of Porgy & Bess. ... On CBS' The Mentalist (10/9c), Patrick Jane gets a new CBI team to torment, led by Reed Diamond, while he tries to get Lisbon and the rest of the gang back together.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Studiocanal Boosts More Film Financing: States It Does Not Need To Borrow To Invest In Slate

DEADLINE PARIS: French pay-TV giant today revealed a slate financing deal worth 150 million ($203.9 million) over the following three years. The money covers 30% in the budgets of Studiocanals worldwide productions. Meaning Studiocanal is going to be trading 200 million yearly on movie production. London-based finance house Anton Capital Entertainment (ACE) has elevated the money through a mix of U.S banks and undisclosed European financial institutions. Union Bank and Bank of America are most likely the U.S. loan providers mixed up in deal. The current announcement should really establish Studiocanals place since the first the avenue for call outdoors the U.S. for intelligent upmarket movies like Mess Tailor Soldier Spy that's fully funded. Olivier Courson, chairman/Boss of Studiocanal, states it's the first time a European small-major provides the kind of slate funding which got Wall Street into such trouble five years ago. Some U.S. traders lost their t t shirts throwing vast amounts at Hollywood. Asked for how he'd reassure traders burnt by previous Hollywood slate fund deals, Courson mentioned the primary difference this time around around around is always that Studiocanal is creating a more varied slate and not numerous blockbusters. Courson states most Hollywood art galleries have operating profits of under 10%,partly because of the ballooning cost of production, crazy marketing stays, and limited slates specific at teens. Studiocanal, however, is on course to produce a 14% profit this year on sales in the varied slate of E400 million. The sale means we'll be capable of increase our investment capacity, which we dont must find partners for each new film. So far we've not required to have a loan to invest in our films, states Courson. Courson states Studiocanal is interested in financingthe next Black Swan or perhaps the Social Media: the kind of films the art galleries have largely abandoned.Paris-based Studiocanal was already riding full of Uk success of Mess, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Courson also desires to make more animated family films, and upmarket genre films such as the just-introduced The Ultimate Exorcism 2. Sebastian Raybaud, controlling director of ACE, states that revenue coming will probably be split from first dollar, rather than getting his traders pressed towards the rear from the queue if the involves getting their funds back as was the problem having a couple of early Hollywood slate deals. The alignment of interests is more preferable in comparison to some couple of from the deals you have often seen, states Raybaud. However, the question remains whether placing 150 million in to a hundred different movies works a lot better than putting the same cash into numerous Hollywoods sure-factor blockbusters. It formerly funded Unknown, starring Liam Neeson, as well as the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost comedy Paul. Future production includes the next Coen Brothers and sisters filmInside Llewyn Davis, produced by Scott Rudin and shooting in NY this fall, along with the Last Photograph, starring Sean Penn and Christian Bale, the following film from Niels Arden Oplev (The Woman While using Dragon Tattoo) and producer Joel Silver. The business releases its own movies in three key European areas France, Germany as well as the Uk which together represent 80% in the European market. Studiocanal also has an enormous back catalogue that, Courson describes, is ripe for plundering. Vital remade Studiocanals original in the Tourist (Anthony Zimmer), while Studiocanal itself remade Brighton Rock, which is developing another Graham Greene remake, The Fallen Idol, with U.S. producer Walter Parkes. Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson is developing a remake of classic British The Second World War movie The Dambusters.

Roman Polanski Returns to Zurich for Ovation After Arrest

Two years after he'd been arrested in Zurich, Roman Polanski received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Zurich Film Festival as he accepted a lifetime achievement award. "Better late than never," he said on finally being able to accept the award in person. In 2009, he was placed under house arrest when he arrived in Switzerland and nearly extradited to the U.S. for outstanding sexual assault charges. The 78-year-old is also the subject of a "secret" new documentary that had its world premiere at the festival. In the documentary, called 'Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir,' he narrates his own life story, up to and including his extradition trial. It was shot during his house arrest by Laurent Bouzereau, who specializes in "making of" documentaries on films from 'Avatar' to 'Jaws.' No critical reactions on the documentary, which screened after the awards ceremony, have surfaced yet, but critics have been raving about his other new film, 'Carnage,' starring Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz. It premiered September 1 at the Venice Film Festival and is getting some of the best reviews since 2002's 'The Pianist,' the film that earned him his first Best Director Oscar. The Polish-born director has lived in Europe since 1978; he fled the U.S. after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. When he entered Switzerland in 2009, he was arrested but, after a lengthy house arrest and trial, was freed without being extradited to America. [via THR 1, 2]

Not so long ago There Resided an easy Lady (Zila-bila odna baba)

A Movie Co. production. (Worldwide sales: Film Co., Moscow.) Created by Andrey Smirnov, Elena Smirnova. Directed, compiled by Andrey Smirnov. With: Darya Yekamasova, Vlad Abashin, Maxim Averin, Aleksey Serebryakov, Aleksey Shevshenkov, Roman Madynav, Vsevolod Shilovsky.Getting abandoned pointing for 3 decades, exasperated by Soviet censorship, vet Russian helmer Andrey Smirnov returns with "Not so long ago There Resided an easy Lady," an ambitious, 156-minute epic replay from the Russian Revolution as seen with the googly eyes of the peasant who comprises in survival abilities what she lacks in brainpower. If fellow returnee Alexi German's "Krustalyov, My Vehicle!" (1998) leaking over and done with 12 years' price of passionate motion picture ideas, "Once" teems with 3 decades of misanthropic, near-apocalyptic bitterness. Strikingly pictorial, fest-friendly but mean-spirited auteur curio will most likely not find distribution outdoors Eastern Europe. Smirnov's saga spans the time of 1909-23 in Tambov, one's heart from the bloody peasant revolt of 1920-21 against collectivization. It represents a period as superstitious, venal and brutal as were the Dark Ages in Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev," that "Once" will probably be unflatteringly in comparison. Smirnov's heroine, Varvara (Darya Yakamasova), suffers through a lot more than her share of beatings, rapes and assorted indignities as a result of relatives (she's whipped ferociously by her father-in-law whenever a equine under her care falls sick), husbands (four, finally count), marauding soldiers and finish other people. Pic is split into two parts, the very first section research in limited awareness that juxtaposes Varvara's uncomprehending, slack-jawed stare using the bigger historic forces playing out round her. Within the second part, that tension no more fuels the narrative as she starts to have interaction, just like a childless Mother Courage carving out her corner of exploitation inside the political morass of publish-revolutionary Russia. As the Bolsheviks are clearly cast as archvillains, their impossible, starvation-inducing grain levies and chapel desecrations driving the peasants to revolt, Smirnov makes little distinction between your natural bestiality from the peasant class and also the ideological cruelty from the revolution, as rapaciousness, superstition, envy and sadism overtake the Russian psyche. Smirnov then concocts a ton of scriptural proportions to eliminate the Bolsheviks inside a tumultuous wave of historic revisionism more radical than anything Stalin ever dreamed of. Aside from the compositional mastery apparent throughout, it's extremely difficult to reconcile the luminous fragility from the young girl in Smirnov's "Angel" (1967), the war-forged camaraderie in the "Belarus Station" (1973) or even the lovers' rueful nostalgia in the "Fall" (1974) with this particular ferocious litany decrying man's inhumanity to guy.Camera (color, widescreen), Nikolay Ivasiv, Yuriy Shaygardanov editor, Alla Urazbaeva music supervisor, Olga Yukecheva production designer, Vladimir Gudilin costume designer, Lydmila Gainceva seem (Dolby SRD), Andrey Hudyakov casting, Tatyana Talkova second unit director, Irina Tretyakova. No Reconciliation for Ryan and Tatum O'Neal

Ryan and Tatum O'Neal This summer time, Ryan and Tatum O'Neal starred on the reality series for OWN that recorded their tries to sort out many years of estrangement and increase their relationship. It did not work. "We simply reconciled on the program,Inch states Ryan. "Not in existence." Ryan & Tatum: The O'Neals adopted the daddy-daughter duo through therapy periods, Tatum's birthday celebration and a visit to the Palm Springs Film Festival for any screening of the 1973 film Paper Moon. However, "we do not speak," Ryan adds. "Actually, we are further apart now than i was whenever we began the show. So thanks, The famous host oprah, for your help." An OWN representative had no comment. Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!
